LED Indicator Application Design
LED technology is becoming increasingly mature. LED indicator lights can be found in most devices and circuits. So, what should we pay attention to when selecting and designing LEDs in practice? Although LEDs encompass a wide range of applications, this article focuses on the key parameters to consider when choosing basic LED indicator lights, along with design examples. In subsequent articles, we will cover the selection and design of specialized LEDs, such as UV LEDs. For now, let’s explore the application design of LED indicator lights!
Are you familiar with full-color LED chip-on-board modules for side mounting?
The brightness of full-color LED surface-mount devices is closely related to the LED’s viewing angle. The narrower the viewing angle, the higher the brightness; moreover, differences in manufacturing processes can lead to significant variations in service life. For a 5-mm LED with a 180-degree viewing angle, the white-light luminous intensity is only a few hundred mcd, whereas for a 15-degree viewing-angle LED, the luminous intensity exceeds 10,000 mcd. When high-power LEDs are used outdoors, the brightness is even greater. Single-power LEDs include 1 W, 3 W, and 5 W models; some high-power LEDs can be combined to form a single high-power LED with output up to several hundred watts. Color temperature is independent of brightness, but brightness is directly related to the lumen value.
Why do light-emitting diodes come in different colors?
An LED, or light-emitting diode, is a solid-state semiconductor device that directly converts electrical energy into light. LEDs are made from group III–IV compound semiconductors, such as GaAs (gallium arsenide), GaP (gallium phosphide), and GaAsP (gallium phosphide arsenide), with a PN junction at their core. Consequently, they exhibit the typical I–V characteristics of a P–N junction: forward conduction, reverse cutoff, and breakdown behavior. The heart of an LED is a semiconductor chip, one end of which is mounted on a support substrate; one terminal serves as the negative electrode, while the other is connected to the positive terminal of the power supply, after which the entire chip is encapsulated in epoxy resin.
What is the operating principle of a light-emitting diode?
Light-emitting diodes are widely used light-emitting devices that generate light through the recombination of electrons and holes. They are extensively employed in the lighting industry. LEDs efficiently convert electrical energy into light and find broad applications in modern society, including general illumination, flat-panel displays, and medical equipment.
Parameters and Characteristics of Light-Emitting Diodes
Typical LED bulbs have a power rating of less than 12 W. Standard LED bulb wattages include 3 W, 4 W, 5 W, 6 W, 7 W, 8 W, 9 W, and 10 W.
Testing and Usage Precautions for High-Brightness White LED Chips
The color rendering index of high-brightness white LED chips can reach the standard value of 80 CRI or higher, and can be customized to 90–95 CRI.
Operating current of LED chips
Overcurrent protection: Excessive current can cause LED chips to fail or result in accelerated brightness degradation. In circuit design, different current-limiting resistors should be paired with LEDs based on their forward voltage drop to provide series-connected protection, thereby ensuring the LEDs operate normally and maintain optimal performance.
